The Department of Pharmacy at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital is a full-spectrum pharmaceutical service unit, encompassing drug procurement, supply, dispensing, clinical pharmacy, rational use of medicines, clinical trial management, and education and research.
The department holds multiple national designations, including a National Training Base for Clinical Pharmacists (Shortage Talent Track), a National Pharmacist Training Base, a National Model Base for Rational Drug Use, a National Clinical Trial Site for Drugs, a pilot unit for Shenzhen’s on-site pharmacist program, and a teaching base for the Clinical Pharmacy program at Guangdong Medical University. As the chair unit of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Management Committee of the Shenzhen Pharmaceutical Association, it plays a leading academic role and serves as a regional model for pharmaceutical practice.
With a team of over 100 pharmacists, the department has long been committed to delivering specialized pharmaceutical care, including rational drug therapy guidance, therapeutic drug monitoring, and pharmacogenomics testing. Our staff bring both solid expertise and a strong research-oriented mindset to their daily work.
Building on the hospital's strong disciplinary framework, the Department of Pharmacy has fostered close physician-pharmacist collaboration and introduced an innovative "clinical pharmacist-in-residence" model. Our clinical pharmacists are permanently stationed in key units, including Medical Oncology, Neurology, and Critical Care Medicine, where they take part in refining treatment plans, consulting on complex and critical cases, and conducting thorough medication monitoring. In the Oncology Department, we have piloted a new approach that combines bedside pharmacy practice with lightweight AI-assisted tools. This model brings together pharmacists from the IV preparation center, outpatient, and inpatient services to form a cross-functional support team, ensuring continuous and coordinated pharmaceutical care for cancer patients throughout their entire treatment journey.
In developing its smart pharmacy system, the department follows an integrated approach that combines hardware with software. The smart supply chain enables precise, end-to-end control over the entire medication lifecycle—from procurement and storage to dispensing and administration. A range of intelligent equipment, including automated dispensing stations, verification systems, transport robots, ward-based medicine cabinets, and small-scale preparation robots, work together to form a complete closed-loop system for patient medication management. AI has been embedded across all aspects of pharmaceutical services. The hospital's fully integrated medication management process has attracted over a thousand domestic and international experts for site visits and knowledge exchange, and is now widely recognized as a benchmark case in smart hospital development.
In managing narcotic and anesthetics substances, the Pharmacy Department has pioneered the use of information technology to build an intelligent, closed-loop system. This system enables full traceability across the entire chain—from procurement, inspection, and storage, to prescription dispensing, clinical administration, and the return of used ampoules. It ensures that every batch is traceable, every distribution path is verifiable, and all potential risks are preventable and manageable. The department also played a key role in drafting the Shenzhen Expert Consensus on Narcotic and Psychotropic Drugs, helping to set regional standards for the safe and standardized management of these controlled substances.
The department is also a strong advocate of the "green pharmacy" concept. By improving inventory management, cutting down on expired drug waste, and promoting paperless workflows, we embed the principles of sustainability and low-carbon operations across the entire pharmaceutical supply chain—from procurement and storage to dispensing and use. Our goal is to strike a sound balance between cost efficiency, patient safety, and environmental responsibility, reflecting the department's commitment to both humanistic care and broader social accountability.
Looking ahead, the Department of Pharmacy at Peking University Shenzhen Hospital will continue to draw on the academic strengths of Peking University and the policy support of the Shenzhen Pilot Demonstration Area. We will further advance smart pharmacy initiatives and foster closer collaboration between medicine and pharmacy. Through these efforts, we aim to ensure patient medication safety, promote the rational use of medicines, and make a meaningful contribution to the "Healthy China" strategy.
